The Victorian Better Health website has a page on "autism" (see http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Autism). I see several problems with their page.
- They say "autism" affects 1 in 1,000 children. There is clear evidence that it affects at least 1 in 160.
- They say "communication is difficult" and "people with autism find being sociable difficult, scary and confusing". By definition, people with autism have "severe and pervasive impairment" in communication and social skills.
- Under the heading "types of help", best practice as agreed by national and international experts is not described.
The content of the web-page follows ...

Autism is a puzzling disorder. It is difficult to understand the behaviour of people with autism, and the world is confusing for the child who suffers from it. Autism affects approximately one in 1,000 Australians. Boys are more likely to be affected than girls. Autism is a developmental disability thought to be a brain disorder. A person with autism has difficulties in some areas of their development, but other areas may be unaffected. The areas most affected are communication, social interaction and behaviour.
